“New” computer

July 21, 2008

I guess I should be grateful. My laptop died on me earlier so I faced a long, computerless summer. Not to mention a whole year standing in line behind the old family desktop.

Fortunately, my mother had been playing with the thought of buying herself a laptop and throwing out that old heap. When my lappy died, I gave subtle hints that now was perhaps the time. She saw my intentions though, but took it with a smile. Ten minutes later she bought a laptop I found for her earlier that day. I now “own” the desktop.

So, here’s the new wonder machine:

Thanks mom ;)

A True Norwegian Summer

July 21, 2008

I hate Norwegian summers. The weather is as stable as a drunk drug-addict balancing on a bridge railing. One day it’s as perfect as can be. Another day it’s like this:

Thor should take the summer off!

July 16, 2008

If you are a WordPress user you’ll most likely have heard about it and done it already, but WordPress 2.6 has been released and it is recommended that users upgrade. Some nifty new features have been added and are showed and explained in the following video.

If you want a free WordPress blog (with some minor limitations) you can check out wordpress.com. If you have a private domain and server you can visit wordpress.org instead and download the full version free of charge. Choices, choices!

Fanboys

July 6, 2008

Rant WarningSeriously! What is with these guys? Apparently, a group of people have started waiting in line for the iPhone 3G, one week early! And you can bet that these people already have the “old” iPhone.

What is with a company that updates its hardware products every six months? No, what is it with customers who actually accepts that kind of crap and buys every version?

Oh, right. They are fanboys, the terminal disease of civilized debate.

I hate fanboys. As soon as you as much as hint at criticism towards a product they’ve embraced you’d better brace yourself for a storm of shit. And there’s no way they would ever listen to your arguments and constructive criticism. Take the Xbox as an example (For the record, I have one myself). When it first came out the controllers were huge. But obviously not for fanboy hands. “They are much better than that Sony/Nintendo crap!”. Oh, the drama…

The worst kind of fanboy in my opinion however, is the Apple fanboy. As Maddox put it:

One person was quoted as saying “I’ve had a Macintosh now for a total of 35 days, and I’m really excited to be part of the Mac community.” Part of the Mac community? It’s a computer, not a social movement, asshole! I feel like Apple is not just selling computers, they’re selling a way of life, and I’m not ready to be that heavily invested in a product.

Fanboy? Fuck you.

The power of Open Source

July 5, 2008

When you start your computer and begin your working session, do you ever sit down and wonder just how much you payed for software? Windows XP/Vista, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop etc. all cost a painful amount of money. The pain is not really assuaged by me telling you that it could all have been free. Not identical (that would be illegal), but close, and it really does the same thing and more. What I’m speaking of is Open Source software.

Windows can be replaced by any given Linux distribution, Microsoft Office can be replaced by Open Office, Photoshop by GIMP. Now, all those are different from their commercial counterparts, and some are willing to pay because of that difference. That’s fine, but if you have bought a Windows Media Center PC and still feel like it was a good purchase after watching the following video, then consider yourself either a stupid fool, a fanboy or one in the state of denial.

Never before have I seen a free, Open Source solution kick the commercial alternative in the ass so severely. I’m sure the developers of Windows MCE are tasting their colon this very minute.

I smiled, and was rather envious (that is an awesome setup!) as I watched the video. I am definitely not buying Windows MCE!

nUbuntu back on track

July 4, 2008

nUbuntu logonUbuntu is a Linux security testing distribution based on Ubuntu (duh). It is about to enter the early development phase for the next release, and so the community needs to help out. The trouble is that the community really isn’t that big, so if you know/can do anything than might help out then check out the forums.

The alpha for 8.04 will be coming soon, this release will be the equivalent of an updated 6.10 version of nUbuntu. From there, we want the community to assist us and recomend to us how they would like the beta to appear. After the beta stage, we’ll continue aiming for stability until we get the first release of LTS 1.

With that being said, lets get these forums active. We’re going to need people to help make this the best network security distribution available. If you know anyone that can participate in any such way to aide in the development, whether it be from graphics design to creating custom packages, let them know about the forums. Lets build this community together!

Also needed are mirrors for the future ISOs, as well as documentation.

Anyway, drop by if you want ;)

Worry About You

July 4, 2008

Worry about You logoWorry About You must be the the most illogical name for a music searching site I have ever heard. How could I have guessed what it was?

Perhaps this “hiding” is intentional. The legality of the service is disputable. Here’s how it works:

1. Enter your search term (e.g. Heaven and Hell)
2. Wait for it……….
3. Look for it in the results.
4. Download it.
5. Rename it.
6. Listen to it!

Does the artist get paied? Not a cent. But technically, the site doesn’t host the files and so really does nothing more illegal than Google. If it survives the lawyers then it might just be your one-stop shop for downloading single songs. It worked like a charm for me!

Et tu, laptop?

July 3, 2008

My beloved laptop said its last goodbyes yesterday. After four years of loyal service it just couldn’t take it anymore. Cause of death? Age, along with searing heat (cooling was always an issue with that thing). Something happened either to the motherboard, the chipset or the chip containing the BIOS (the BIOS won’t even start. Oh, the humanity!). Either way, I’m not fixing it.

So, right now I’m writing from my mother’s desktop while she’s at work. I might just take over this one in a while, when she buys a laptop of her own. As of now I’m a computerless geek. And a computerless geek is not a happy geek :(

Amilo Deathbed

Rust in peace, and thanks for your service.

And now on to the scavenging recovery of usable hardware!

Edit: You think the warranty is void?

Flipping the Linux Switch, and taping it in place

June 30, 2008

spaceintentionallyleftblankSome do it out of frustration, some out of curiosity, some out of principles and some for the lulz fun. Whatever the reason for a switch from X to Linux, the main reason for switching back is this: old applications will be missed.

Whether you’ve learned all keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop or need Live Messenger to exist, there is an alternative on Linux. It might not be the same, but it can get close, and sometimes even be better than what you’re used to.

Here comes a list and a small “review” of some Windows applications I missed, but found a replacement for as well as instructions on how to install them on any Debian-based distro (e.g. Ubuntu).

Check them out after the break.
